Metallurgy

Added along the melting process in cast iron and steel, silicon carbide produced by RR SiC brings an significant cost saving due to its properties in the reduction of slag, its exothermic energy supply and its improvement in the characteristics of metal finally obtained.

To be used either directly in the furnace, RR SIC supplies different grades and presentations of silicon carbide, to fit customer needs.

Cost savings in the metallurgical industry

Metallurgical silicon carbide is mainly used for deoxidation and recarburation of cast iron and steel. When added along the smelting process, silicon carbide manufactured by RR SiC disgregates into its fundamental components; carbon produces the recarburation of iron, while silicon facilitates deoxidation of the metal. This exothermic decomposition reaction rises the temperature of the melt, reduces the appearance of pores, provides energy savings and allows a better graphite distribution in cast iron.

Silicon carbide acts as a fuel, and provides benefits by improving the quality and machinability of steels and cast irons and extending the life of the furnace lining. It also improves the recovery of secondary elements such as manganese and chromium, and produces slags with a consistency and melting point that allow a most efficient removal from the furnace.

The use of silicon carbide produced by RR SiC results in a significant cost reduction due to its properties as a slag reductor, energy contribution, improvement of the characteristics of steel and replacement of other additives such as ferrosilicon.
